Start and End with 'A'
I was talking to a new friend from my dad's law firm when we realised that the names of many, many countries started and ended with the letter 'a'. He challenged me to think of a name that started with 'a' but did not end with an 'a', failing which I would have to buy him one of those pancake-waffle thingys from Prima Deli. It was a loooong while before I thought of Afghanistan. Otherwise it was Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria...
Now that I'm back home and able to go on the internet, I went on wikipedia and realised that almost all the countries listed in the 'A' category began AND ENDED with 'a'! All except for Afghanistan and Azerbaijan.
AZERBAIJAN? Where is that right? Read all about it on wikipedia here(I am perfectly willing for you to call me stupid or a 'sua ku', but I didn't even know that such a place called Eurasia existed).
Oh ok, Eurasia is not a "place" per se. More about it:
Eurasia is a large landmass covering roughly 53,990,000 km² which is 10.6% of the surface of the Earth and 36.2% of its total land area. Sometimes considered a single continent, Eurasia comprises the geo-political areas of Europe and Asia, concepts which date back to classical antiquity with somewhat arbitrary borders. Eurasia, in turn, is part of the yet larger landmass of Afro-Eurasia, as Eurasia is joined to Africa at the Isthmus of Suez. Eurasia has over 4.6 billion people, more than 69% of the world's human population.
One other interesting thing: My handphone dictionary actually has the word "azerbaijan"!
