The Little Nyonya's Big Reunion

I went to Youtube today and discovered that the user whose Youtube channel I am subscribed to had uploaded this "special" - if I'm not wrong, it aired on Monday, 26th January. I'm quite impressed with the whole thing actually. The cast were all so comfortable and sporting. They were really funny as well. Somehow I expected them to be stiff and uncomfortable, but I was completely wrong. Furthermore, the host (Desmond Koh, I think) was able to involve each and every character who was on the set, moving quickly from interesting question to interesting question. Very well done! A must-watch for those who have caught some or the whole show! I've chosen to embed Part 1 of the special. If you want to catch the other 6 parts (7 parts in total), go to Youtube!

Yesterday, I arrived back from lectures in the evening and got a "While You Were Out" slip from the postman. He had tried to deliver a package but there was nobody in to sign for it, so he returned it to the depot. I could call and arrange for the package to be transferred to the small post office nearer by in Beeston, but that would take an extra day. I couldn't wait to see what it was. In the end, I walked to the depot after my lectures today. It was a 35-minute walk there (I was walking with Angie so we were walking slower as we talked) and a 25-minute walk back. Well worth the walk (exercise), I say! Today's treasure - a box of fantastic, heartwarming things from Joanne and Alekx: When you first open the box, this is what you see- Laying out the treasures found inside this treasure box (Sorry, forgot to rotate it, but too lazy to do it now)- Joanne and Alekx gave me another pack of bak kwa, which is really nice. But I still have another big pack from my mum when m...

Happy 牛 Year

Yesterday, I had a 'reunion dinner' with the Singaporeans who are in my Year at Hong Zhen's house. It was a very simple affair. 2 rice cookers, quite a lot of food, laksa (made by Po Yew), beer, sitting around the living room... It was actually so quiet at times, it didn't feel festive at all. It seemed like a simple 'get together' on no special occasion, save for the Chinese New Year (CNY) decorations put up by John, Angie, Po Yew and Hong Zhen. (The sign was drawn by John. The shot of me and Janice was taken before dinner, when we were waiting for everyone else to arrive. I thought we were late, but we were kinda like the earliest, save for the people living in that house) On Friday, I decided to try making 'mudd pie' (as spelt on the recipe I got off the internet). So on Saturday, I went to Beeston to get the ingredients, and made it in the afternoon so that I could freeze it overnight and bring it to the dinner on Sunday. Here's the end product: ...

Post Exam Activities

First up, Sue May and I tried out takeout from this new Cantonese restaurant that opened not long ago. This restaurant is really near my church. It is called "Chasing Dragon". I had the Special Fried Rice: It was really good! Together with egg fried rice (YUM), there was veggies, prawns, chicken and pork. All this for £4.20 (not super cheap, but not too expensive as well. Ok, it's the 'usual takeout' price I guess). I'm definitely going to get takeout from this place again! On Thursday, Sue May, Janice and I had a 'proper celebration' since I was the last one amongst the three of us to officially finish exams. We had Dominos pizza with garlic bread and coke! Janice also brought over some lamb stew that she had cooked the night before. It was REALLY GOOD! It made Sue May and I miss the Hall (i.e. British) food we got last year... When we were done eating (a.k.a. stuffed ourselves silly), we sat around and talked, watched a few videos online, Janice play...

DONE!

I officially took my last exam for the first semester! The exam wasn't all bad and I found it easier than the past year papers. I really do like learning Japanese!:)

にほんごのべんきょうをします (Nihongo no benkyou o shimasu)!

My Criminal law paper yesterday was something I survived without the worry of failing it. I remembered all my case names and the principles of law to be applied. However, I failed to finish my essay in time - my very first time failing in my time management during an exam!:( So, I'm not hoping for much results-wise. I'm just glad it is over. As for my next, and last, paper, it is Japanese! The paper consists of 3 sections. Section A is a comprehension. Section B consists of about 3 or 4 parts testing grammar, vocab and sentence structure, amongst other things. Section C requires a short composition. My Japanese paper will be on Thursday, 22nd January, 1:30-3pm. Yesterday night, I was thinking of having pizza with Janice because I was craving some western food. However I decided that we should save the pizza-eating for Thursday when my exams are actually over. In the end, Angie invited me over for 'siu yok' because I always asked to be invited over when she was making ...

What I'm striving for now: Calmness

Tomorrow 9-10.30am Criminal Law paper. 2 questions. One and a half hours. Actus reus, causation, mens rea, intention, murder, voluntary manslaughter, provocation, involuntary manslaughter, constructive manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, reckless manslaughter. Stay calm. Revise cases. Go to the exam hall tomorrow. Write down everything relevant to the exam questions. Stop fretting. All things are possible with God!

Blow Wind Blow

Goodness, the wind has been so strong today. If it is blowing from behind, it drives you along the direction you're heading in. If it is blowing in the opposite direction, you feel like you're trudging along, pushing a wall in front of you to move forward. If you're walking outside and it is raining, don't bother with an umbrella because the wind is so unpredictable, your umbrella will probably break or just 'pop' the wrong way. If you're in your room, with windows closed, you still can hear the sound of the wind. It is quite scary. I hope the wind isn't as strong tomorrow, and I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow morning when I go to church and return home from church. *Shucks, Crim Law paper day after tomorrow!

Three

Spot the number '3'... 3 rd day of not leaving the room I have not left my room for the third day now, excluding the short 5 minutes or so that I took the trash out. It's quite scary, how I haven't left my room all this while... I want to go out but at the same time I know I should be sticking it out in my room, forcing myself to study. Yesterday, I woke up, washed up, and opened my curtain to see this: If it was Singapore, you'd think that the haze has hit us really really REALLY bad. But, no. It is thick fog. It was pretty much grey and foggy for most of the day, if I remember correctly. 3 cases with the same name: Smith Can they start naming cases more creatively please? I have now come across 3 cases with exactly the same name under different Criminal Law topics that took place over 3 different years. Smith (1979): Under the topic of omissions. Authority that states that the institution of marriage does not itself generate a duty of care between spouses. There...

Like some Airline video

I just watched the 3+ minutes of the "final chapter" of Little Nyonya, the Channel 8 drama serial that ended last week. [Spoiler alert] I think it is so unnecessary? Anyhow, from the time of 2:59 onwards, I felt like I was watching some kind of Airline video, the one where they would show before the airplane takes off, briefing all passengers on what to do in cases of emergencies and stuff like that? Seeing Chen Xi stand behind Yueniang like that reminds me of when the air stewards and stewardesses on the video would end the video saying, "Thank you for your attention. Have a pleasant flight." Don't you think so? On the topic of Little Nyonya, I read an article from Mediacorp TV about this "Final Chapter" and I really wonder why people are making so much noise over a drama serial such that Mediacorp people have to step out to make further explanation! It's quite ridiculous, frankly. Just read it here . After reading it, I laughed. AND the DVD is co...

It. Is. Done.

Although the dateline is tomorrow, I decided to hand in both my essays today, so that I can actually feel like the deal has been sealed. Over the past four weeks of Christmas break, I completed a 9-page EU Law essay, as well as an 18-page Legal Research Paper in the area of Criminal Law. I am not sure what my results will be like, but the fact that I actually completed a 9-page and an 18-page essay alone is enough to make me feel satisfied with myself. Getting great marks would make life complete. Before I left for school this morning, I decided to take a photo of the two essays side by side, with the top sheets as the top page. The second shot is of the thickness of my 18-page essay (plus 1 page of bibliography and the top sheet, making it a stack of 20 pages). This last shot is of the notes I'd scribbled for myself in preparation of the outline of my 18-page essay. I'd anchored them in place on my table with Blu Tack. I took a photo of them before I took them out. I'm act...

Details in the Fabric - Jason Mraz (feat. James Morrison)

Here's a nice song I just discovered yesterday. It's a really soothing song. And I love the music arrangement! The guitar is basically playing pretty much the same thing through most of the song, then the strings plays softly in the background. Simple and yet, oh-so-nice. I'm not really sure what the guy is saying at the beginning and end of the song though. Enjoy! Tell me what you think of the song:) Lyrics here (because I think the lyrics are nice): Calm down Deep breaths And get yourself dressed instead Of running around And pulling all your threads and Breaking yourself up If it's a broken part, replace it But, if it's a broken arm then brace it If it's a broken heart then face it And hold your own Know your name And go your own way Hold your own Know your own name And go your own way And everything will be fine Hang on Help is on the way Stay strong I'm doing everything Hold your own Know your name And go your own way Hold your own Know your name And g...

When you are homesick...

...NEVER listen to Michael Buble's song entitled "Home". Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not homesick or depressed. I just... don't feel like studying, haha. Ok, so I should change the sentence to: "When you are homesick or are trying to study but finding it very hard to get down to studying, NEVER listen to Michael Buble's song entitled 'Home'."

On Tuesday (30 Dec '08), Janice, John, Tzen and her younger sister came to my room to have dinner. Tzen contributed the chye sim, John contributed eggs fried sunny-side-up while I cooked claypot chicken rice. Afterwards, we sat around over grapes and Ben & Jerry's ice-cream, while John and Janice played the guitar. I forgot that I was cooking for 5 people, so didn't borrow Janice's larger rice cooker. Have you noticed how there seems to be a little rice mountain rising up from my little rice cooker?:) John also lent Dylan the Dog his cap: On Thursday (1 Jan '09), John came over to my room to have 'ba chor' mee with Janice and I. Janice was the great chef who made the 'ba chor' mee!:) After dinner, John had another crazy session with the Photo Booth application on my macbook. This time around, we added background effects by way of photos I had saved in my macbook. So, suddenly, John was smelling giant flowers... ...part of One-Third... ...and wen...
