Learn with me: Parliamentary Supremacy (Consti)

- Legislative supremacy involves not only the right to change the law but also that no one else should have that right. - The Bill of Rights and the Act of Settlement established the legislative authority of the English Parliament vis-รก-vis the Crown, while preserving the prerogatives of the Crown in matters which had not been called in question. - Meaning of legislative supremacy: there are no legal limitations on the power of Parliament to legislate - Legal nature of legislative supremacy: This doctrine consists essentially of a legal rule which governs the relationship between the courts and the legislature, namely that the courts are under a duty to apply the legislation made by Parliament and may not hold an Act of Parliament to be invalid or unconstitutional (Unconstitutional doesn't necessarily mean that it is illegal. But what is illegal is unconstitutional). How boring can Constitutional Law get? If you need a cure for insomnia and, somehow or another, you have a Constitut...

Wonderful Weather

Image
Discounting the occasional rains throughout the day, the weather has been great! Today, the sun is out in full force and it really is a splendid day! Yesterday after dinner, we decided to take a short walk by the lake. For some cheering up and to reward ourselves for doing work for the night, we then decided to watch "27 dresses" together in Allan's room at the end of the night. At 10:30pm, we all reported to Allan's room looking all ready to go to bed immediately after the movie. Digressing a little, I think "27 dresses" is yet another feel-good, chick flick that I will only watch once. If I have to watch it again, it is probably because I like James Marsden. However, I still like him best when he acted in Ally McBeal. As to the storyline of the movie, it reminded me somewhat of "How to lose a guy in 10 days"... not as engaging though. Moving backwards in time for just a night - on Thursday we went out for dinner as a belated birthday celebration ...

That sudden pang

You know how, sometimes, all of a sudden, you feel like you're lost "somewhere out there" where there is no one around you and you find yourself all alone in some strange, unfamiliar place?  Well, I get that quite a bit once in a while ever since I came over here to Nottingham to study. As if I suddenly want to talk or write to someone and yet, there is no one to talk or write to. I am actually a loss as to who to talk to. People in Singapore are sleeping and here in Nottingham, there isn't anyone to talk to. Oh, not to worry, I do have friends to go out with and talk to, but in times like this, they are not the kind of friends I feel like turning to. Even then, if there was someone awake at this unearthly hour (in Singapore), I would probably say "hello" to them, and then be at a loss as to what I actually want to say to them. I would want to know what is going on in Singapore and yet at the same time, it can be quite difficult to hear of the little things ...

Flashback: April Babies

In my first week of term 3, I celebrated 2 other people's birthdays as well as my own birthday. Trang's 19th birthday We got Trang a yoghurt-cake and a packet of orange juice as I remembered that Trang rarely ate sweet things and she always doesn't seem keen on birthday cakes. So, we had a mini and healthy birthday celebration for her when she got back. It was supposed to be a surprise the moment she entered FB, where she'll see us all ready, with the candle lit, to sing "Happy Birthday" for her. However, when she came in, I'd just run back from my room as I'd forgotten to bring down my gift for her and was out of breath. We hurried to light the candle as she stood there looking at us. I tried to get the rest to start singing first, but they kept stopping when I didn't sing! Allan's 21st birthday We got Allan a banana-cake, because he LOVES bananas. And I made sure that it's the particular brand of bananas that he likes. Also, we each wrote...

So far

Weather so far : The number of hours of daylight is increasing a few minutes at a time each and every day. Now, the sun rises at 6am and it sets at 8pm. To be very detailed, the sun rose at 5:57am and set at 8:10pm today. Temperature-wise, it's been in the range of 5-12 degrees celcius. Except that the real feel can go as low as 2 degrees celcius because of the wind. The sun has been out and about shining very brightly the past few days. Today, however, has been an especially gloomy day as the wind was so strong, making it biting cold. Recorded temperature at one point in time was 9 degrees celcius, but the real feel was a mere 3 degrees. Thanks to the wind. And the fact that the sun was hiding somewhere behind all the clouds. Contract law so far : I had my last Contract tutorial with Rogers yesterday afternoon. Out of 7 people, only 3 attended: me and the 2 other British girls in my tutorial group. Rogers may not be the most structured or clearest tutor when it comes to teaching u...

Contract Law = kill me please

I'm starting my revision proper for Contract Law now and just revisiting the topic "Offer and Acceptance" is mind-boggling enough. WHY must they discuss when it is an offer or simply an invitation to treat when it comes to time-tables and vending machines? Just go through with a normal, simple, everyday transaction already. Will there ever be someone stupid enough to sue a bus company for some bus fare because a contract had been formed between the passenger and the bus company (represented by the bus driver)? Well, maybe there will be someone so bored with his/her life who will decide to bring a case like that to court. This someone will have to be rich to afford the litigation costs as well for a measly amount that makes up the bus fare. And I'm rambling. So, I will end here. In the meantime, some reverse psychology is needed: Contract law is great. Contract law can be understood. Contract law is something you like. Contract law is oh-so-easy to conquer. Contract la...

Flashback: My 20th Birthday

Image
In the week of my birthday: Wednesday, 2nd April : Birthday shopping with my brother, mother and Shu-En. My brother had a day free of classes so he had decided on doing some birthday shopping for me and Carolin. He asked me whether there was anything I wanted that he could get for me as a birthday present, but I had absolutely no idea as to what I could tell him to get for me. So, I accompanied him to PS and eventually decided to ask him for drama serials. To be specific, he bought me two Korean drama serials that still lie unopened at home. At Jigsaw Puzzle World, I saw this really pretty jigsaw puzzle that I liked very, very much. So my mum got it for me as a birthday present. This jigsaw puzzle has 2000 pieces that are really small in size. I actually have never been a jigsaw puzzle kind of person, but I really liked the end product of this jigsaw puzzle. When my mum actually bought it for me, I decided that I will do it one bit at a time. Since I was leaving Singapore in about a we...
