Day 9: 9 July: Edinburgh & York

Image
[To go to other days of the trip: Day 8: Edinburgh ] Friday morning, 9 July, we woke up, had a simple breakfast of the things we had bought from the other day, then we packed up and checked out of the apartment. We drove over to the pier to see the Royal Yacht Britannia, which I must say is the tourist attraction I like the most out of all the tourist attractions we visited on this holiday. Why? Well, in different places there are palaces and castles, squares and clock towers, as well as churches and cathedrals. But getting the chance to visit the Royal Boat seem pretty much like a one-of-a-kind holiday experience. Not only was it interesting to get to see how the Queen and royalty lived on the boat on their 'sea travels', I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the living quarters of the boat crew and staff who traveled together with the Royal Family, taking care of their wants and needs. This is another thing for me that set it apart from other seemingly similar experiences when...

Day 8: 8 July: Edinburgh

[To go to other days of the trip: Day 7: Keswick & Edinburgh , Day 9: Edinburgh & York ] On our second day in Edinburgh (our first and only full day in Edinburgh), we had a simple breakfast of buttered toast, cereal with milk, and hot drinks like coffee and hot chocolate - all groceries we bought from Tesco's the evening before. Our first highlight of the day was the Edinburgh Castle, which was described like this by Frommer's : "Few locations in Scotland have lore that can equal Edinburgh Castle's. The very early history is somewhat vague, but in the 11th century, Malcolm III and his Saxon queen, later venerated as St. Margaret, founded a building on this spot. There's only a fragment of their original pile in St. Margaret's Chapel, which dates principally to the 1100s. After centuries of destruction, demolitions, and upheavals, the buildings that stand today are basically those that resulted from the castle's role as a military garrison ove...

Looking Back to Last Weekend: 4: Singapore's Birthday

Image
It was Singapore's birthday on 9 August 2010. She turned 45 this year. Every year, we have a National Day Parade (NDP) song. This year, Corinne May wrote and sang the song, "Song For Singapore". Here's the video, you can choose to just listen to the song or you can watch the video as you listen to the song. And while you do so, read my blog entry!:) We had dimsum brunch as a family at Royal China restaurant at Raffles Hotel. We first heard of Royal China in Bayswater, London. And the egg tarts and roast duck at the Bayswater branch was rrrreeeaalllyyy good! So, when we found out that there was a Royal China branch in Singapore, we were very interested to find out the standard: Picture of the family inside the restaurant while we were waiting for the food to arrive: This is supposedly one of their signature dishes: the crispy duck. It had soooo much meat in the roll! Eh... I think the roast duck and egg tarts at the Bayswater branch in London were nicer... The food her...
