Constantly Changing

It really can be quite exciting just seeing how Law is evolving and changing with each and every decision being made in the courts, especially when it concerns topics that I am learning about now, or have learnt so far. In addition, the names of the judges are actually familiar to me, especially Lord Bingham of Cornhill and Lord Scott of Foscote. I'm secretly (open secret I guess. And you can laugh at me, don't worry) trying to imagine what it would be like to actually meet them. It has come to a point where they seem like celebrities to me because I always see their names in the case reports I read. Po Yew just gave me this link to read. It's a very new case on a House of Lords decision regarding psychiatric harm, relational financial loss and causation - topics of which I have learnt in my lectures of Tort law. This sounds so silly but... I actually find this very cool.

Tremors in the Wee hours of the morning

I had just fallen asleep for not long when the bed started shaking. I thought it was a dream! And to make me sound even more stupid, I actually kinda imagined myself to be sitting on an Osim massage chair or something... But apparently there was a small earthquake somewhere in the south of the UK! Read about it here . It was a great conversation topic over breakfast this morning.

So. I haven't been sleeping well this week, and the week before. Which makes me feel very crappy during the waking hours, with mood swings affecting me quite a bit. Then there's the thing about the absence of a suitable house/apartment to rent, what with Daniel pressing me for some kind of decision as he will apply for another year of school accommodation in Jubilee Campus if we don't decide very soon. And then there's Tzen, who is holding her usual position and phrase of "anything lor", making me feel too picky about everything about the properties we have viewed. To top it all off, I'm suddenly feeling very, very homesick. I will overcome this, I must! Why am I discouraged? Why so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again - my Saviour and my God! Psalm 42:11

There's life. And then there's death.

This week was a much warmer week as compared to last week, where we had "freak weather". Just when we thought that winter had passed us by without making much of a scene, temperatures dropped below zero in the day, with frost covering the fields and trees on campus. On Tuesday morning last week, I found myself running in a temperature of -4 degrees celsius, with real feel at -7 degrees celsius. It was freezing. The biting cold was felt severely in my fingers even though I was wearing a pair of gloves. It seemed like Christmas time again as the trees were covered with frost and everything was white. Just look at the view from the window in my room: As of last week, the colour of my tulips turned, strangely, from a striking orange to pink to red and now it is a lifeless purple. It is time to throw away the tulips that were once so beautiful and lively in colour. Yesterday, we brought Tzen to Cadbury World in Bournville, Birmingham, to make the weekend of her birthday extra spec...

Housing update

Still no house in sight/mind yet. I was just beginning to panic a little, and I keep asking God, "WHEN GOD, WHEN?!". Well, I just finished today's reading from the One Year Bible, and again, I feel as if the readings were picked out especially for me. The moment I read them, I felt ashamed of myself, for doubting God, for trying to RUSH God. I still believe that He will bring the right house and everything will work out for the best. It is just that this impatient me wishes it could be settled quickly. Then I read Psalm 37:34, " Don't be impatient for the Lord to act! Travel steadily along his path. He will honor you, giving you the land . You will see the wicked destroyed." And it only served to further deepen the impact it had on me because the New Testament reading was partly on Jesus calming the storm when He was on the boat with His disciples. His questions to His disciples struck me, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still not have faith in me?...

Housing issue

Today, Tzen, Daniel and I were all ready to head over to Whitegates, the property agent, to submit our deposit and application forms for the house on Lower Road, Beeston. We got there at about 2pm, only to discover that a group of 3 guys had already taken exactly the same house, submitting in their forms and deposit at 9am today. So we have to look for another house now. The thing is that I was actually kinda expecting it... On Saturday, when we went to view the house with Daniel (as the first time round of viewing, Daniel wasn't with us), we saw 3 guys standing outside the house, peering in curiously. If I'm not wrong, it is the same 3 guys who beat us to the house today. When we heard it, Tzen was bitter, angry and disappointed. Somehow, I just knew something like this would happen so when it actually happened, the impact on me wasn't as great. Well, the moment we reached back, I went on the internet and tried searching for more houses. On CP Walker's website, we saw ...

All Girls thingy

In a spontaneous moment, Hongzhen, Janice and I decided to have a mini steamboat, because Hongzhen felt like having steamboat and Janice has a rice cooker and her own little kitchen in her room at Broadgate Park. We decided to keep it amongst ourselves. Besides, the rest were busy with their own stuff. John has gone to London for the weekend, Po Yew had a hallmate's birthday party to attend, Angie had to be at the Malaysian-Singaporean Society's (MSS) Valentine's Day movie screening because she is part of the MSS committee (We decided to 'boycott' the MSS movie event even though we should be attending it as we're members of MSS - steamboat's a much better choice). So! We had steamboat, sesame-filled 'tang yuan' for dessert and Ben & Jerry's Phish Food as "movie food". You see, while we were eating and eating, we were watching "What a Girl Wants" on Janice's laptop. After "What a Girl Wants", we watched the fi...

happy valentine's day!

If you want to know, I'm not doing anything special today. Not to take on a very "cynical, sad singleton" point of view, but 14th of February is most meaningful only when you have a spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend to celebrate with, isn't it? If I was back in Singapore, I may be spending time with good gal-friends as it will be a great excuse to meet up, now that we're pretty much busy with our own separate things: But I'm not in Singapore. If I was still in SA, or in Tung Ling, I would have made little cards or something for my friends in school: But I'm no longer in SA or Tung Ling now. If I could still attend LSBC every weekend, there would probably be some YPM or cell activity to celebrate this day as Friendship Day: But I can't attend LSBC every weekend now. Actually, all my life, with the exception of one year, I would spend the nights of 14th February at home, having dinner with my parents and probably watching TV afterwards for a bit... And d...

Family trip to HK - Dec 2007

Image
Courtesy of my sister who posted these photos onto her facebook account, let me just show you some photos taken during my family holiday to Hong Kong last year from 26-31 December. The photos are not in chronological order and placed quite haphazardly in this entry. If you want to take a closer look at the photos, click on them and you should be able to see it a little more clearly as it comes out bigger: I'm just quickly putting up all the photos and cannot be bothered with making sure the photos are of the similar size or of a nicer layout, so, please forgive me if this entry seems... messy:)

Chinese New Year 2008 (THANK YOU ZHULONG!)

Image
It's the Chinese New Year celebration period right now, isn't it? Well, here in Nottingham, they try to organise performances and events with fireworks in a bid to "properly" celebrate Chinese New Year. Just look at the sign that Sainsbury's put up at its entrance: My hall had a Chinese themed night for dinner on Friday and I just think it was very nice of the chef to try to cook Chinese food for those of us who celebrate Chinese New Year. On Wednesday night, the Singaporeans gathered for a reunion dinner at Yun's Cantonese Restaurant in Beeston. We then had a dessert party in the ironing room nearest to Janice's room in Broadgate Park as we only had the table at Yun's from 5:30-7pm. What really made my day, and probably week, was the mail I got today. Actually, I think the mail reached the hall yesterday but I had not collected it from the reception until just now, after I had finished my dinner. Zhulong sent me 'ba gua', 32 mini packets of it...
