Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood
Saying goodbye is so difficult, so heartwrenching.
I have just finished reading "Girls in Pants", a book I was soooo eager to buy when it first came out many months ago. It was a hardcover edition though, so I didn't buy it. I only discovered on Thursday that Kinokuniya sells the soft cover edition now. So on Saturday when my family went to Taka for dinner, I jumped at the opportunity to use my dad's discount card to get the book.
This third book in the "travelling pants" series focuses on the last summer of the 4 girls Lena, Tibby, Carmen and Bridget before they enter different universities all over the U.S. Now that I've completed it, I keep thinking about farewell assembly and what life is going to be like when I have no more school to attend. I don't think I'll miss the school itself, but more of One-Third. My fellow One-Thirders will probably cry their eyes out when school is over for good, so I'd better bring a whole box of tissue so I can be the person who hands out the tissue, since I'm not a very cry-ey person and I think I won't cry, I'll just feel S-DUPER sad, with a pained heart.
What is it going to be like as a undergraduate? Oh man, I'm going to study in a university end next year. It's all too surreal, seriously. I don't feel 18 at all! There can be nice, big celebrations but it all counts for nothing in the end. Indeed, good memories, but shouldn't it help in the transition from 17 to 18? So there isn't a MAJOR difference but we do make a big deal out of a person's 18th birthday, and an even bigger deal out of a person's 21st birthday.
What about love? In this book, Tibby, Carmen and Bridget all find love while Lena is still trying to recover from a very broken heart. Makes me wonder what would it be like if the whole of One-Third suddenly got boyfriends at the same time. In the last part of the book, the 4 girls had a stayover and their phones kept ringing, especially from their boyfriends and loved ones. Can you imagine One-Third then? All 7 phones ringing? It would be madness!
And I'm rambling. Therefore, I shall just enter in some quotes found in the book:
"There are many things that we would throw away if we were not afraid that others might pick them up" - Oscar Wilde
"Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on" - John Keats
"To love another person is to see the face of God" - Victor Hugo
"Tibby breathed out, finding inexpressible comfort in her friends' faces. Before her eyes, this night had transformed into the gift of reassurance. This was the future. Life would get busier and more varied, populated both by beautiful things and unfortunate circumstances. If their friendship demanded exclusivity or solitude, it couldn't work. If it required that everything go as planned, it would turn brittle, and ultimately it would break. On the other hand, she knew that if they could be flexible and big, if they could encompass change, then they would make it."
