High Time for Blogging - Major Updates

YES, THE LONG WEEKEND IS HERE!

I finished my first week of internship at Rodyk & Davidson LLP yesterday. So far so good! I have 3 more weeks of internship to go, and I'm looking forward to what is to come!

Today, tomorrow, and Monday, I fully intend to slack as much as possible. Spend some time in front of the TV, read a little, have good meals with my family at home, and have time for myself to do all sorts of many little nothings.

Now. I blog about the important things that took place over the last 2 weeks or so.

Jolene's farewell cum early birthday party - 27 July
I got the cell together for a steamboat dinner at my house. It was the best and only chance we'd get to see Jolene before she flew off to the US on exchange in Connecticut. It was more an early birthday celebration for her than anything else. I thought we should celebrate it with her before she leaves since she'll be spending her 21st over there on 27 September.

Through Janice's contact, we got FABULOUS cake for her. We also made sure we stuck 21 candles on the cake!It was a good night where we got to bond as a cell too!
Sending Jolene off - 30 July
Together with Elizabeth, I took the bus down to the airport to send Jolene off. We met a few other people at the airport.I felt a little strange sending my best friend off when all along it's been her that has been doing the sending-off. Moreover, I barely spent any quality catch-up time with her this summer break because when I got back from my family holiday, she was really busy with summer school and the school trips related to that. She left on exchange far too soon!Anyhow, as a farewell present, I tried to catch many church friends to take polaroids of them. Then I passed the whole stack of polaroids to Jolene together with blu-tack, so that when she settles into her room, she'll be able to paste up all the polaroids on her wall using that blu-tack. Take a look at the polaroids for yourself:Have a safe time of exchange, Jo! REMEMBER TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ME!

Celebrating Andrew's 21st & Nicholas' 19th - 31 July
After central equipping that Friday, we surprised Andrew and Nicholas with a cake. Well, at least we TRIED to surprise them. But I heard Nicholas had heard about it already. And the whole thing turned out a little messy. Then almost all of us went to have supper.

Now, while I like roti prata, I wish it didn't make me feel so unhealthy after eating it as supper. I can never go to bed with a peaceful stomach after eating roti prata for supper!

Cell games - 2 August
For the first time ever, Joel Chia got the cell group to play captain's ball and ultimate frisbee after lunch on Sunday.Playing captain's ball for the first time in at least 2 years reminded me of the fun times of captain's ball in JC. The fact that I was wearing my SAJC PE t-shirt compounded the rate at which memories were "resurfacing".

Also, due to all my bugging, Amy gave in and wore the t-shirt and shorts I lent her to get involved in the games as well. Somebody mentioned that they found it hard to tell us apart because both of us had long ponytails and were in SAJC PE tees. It didn't help that we were playing on opposing teams.
Good books I've read this summer
I've been trying to read more books, particularly novels, while I'm back here in Singapore. The reason is that, in Nottingham, I'm too tired from reading all the cases, articles and textbooks that I don't think I can take reading some more, even if it's just novels. Good novels tend to be based on reality, things happening in real life, and real life is sad, which in turn cause me to feel all emo when I read good novels. So, I don't read novels in Nottingham.

Upon my return, I finished books 8, 9 and 10 of the Princess Diaries' series. I actually own the entire series - all 10 books [but I'm missing book 1 in this photo. I couldn't find it:(].I've been following this series ever since secondary school! I stopped for a long while. Then when I realised that the 10th, and final, book of the series had already been published, I purposed to complete the whole series since I'd read most of the books in this series already.

It is classified as "chick lit" to me - so it was an enjoyable read. And it got me laughing quite a bit. Quite brainless. Not so much reflection involved.

After the Princess Diaries' books, I read this book called "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch.Over my easter break, my mum actually passed me this book and said it was a good book.

I agree. It is a fantastic book. Succinct, to the point, so meaningful, so applicable to life in its lessons taught. But very sad. I was reading the last chapter of the book on the MRT and almost cried. When tears came to my eyes, I quickly closed the book and stopped reading on because I definitely did not want to start crying on the train!

Today, I just finished the book called "The White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga. It is a dark satire on life in India. Very real, very interesting. It is also saddening to read of how life is in reality for so many of the poor, underprivileged, and the "common man on the streets" in India.

But it is a very very good book. It got me reflecting. Also, it is not the kind of novels that will leave you feeling very emo and a little depressed. I think it is due to the fact that the author writes in a seemingly lighthearted manner, but conveys so much in the apparently humourous and sarcastic style of writing.

If you have time, READ IT. Read "The Last Lecture" as well - it is one powerful book.

I shall now ask my dad to recommend me another novel to read.

Societal problems these days reflect the heirarchy system of the past.

Your father mentioned the book The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie is a good read. :)
