Starting Final Quarter with Sara Bareilles

Eugene and I watched Sara Bareilles perform at the Esplanade Concert Hall last night, together with Kevin and Tina. It was FANTASTICALLY AWESOME.

It started at 8:30pm with an opening act by one of her team mates, Misty Boyce. She sang until 9pm. Then there was a half-hour intermission. At about 9:35pm, Sara Bareilles came on and she sang all the way until 11pm. It was a whole medley of familiar and newer songs. She switched between acoustic guitar, keyboard, electric guitar and ukelele.

Last night it was more of an acoustic setting with her and 2 other band members, Misty Boyce and Steve Goold. It was just 3 people, but the music was SO full and so tight, it was amazing. Misty Boyce was on the keyboards, acoustic guitar on a few songs, and backing vocals. She blended so well with Sara Bareilles! I was amazed at how she could play a bass line on 1 keyboard and play another line on the other keyboard (she had 2 keyboards, 1 stacked on top of the other). Then there was Steve Goold on the percussions, who was absolutely AWESOME.

I've been a fan of her songs since her very first album. I love that she has a voice that is strong, unique and so good, with such a great range. She plays the keyboard. She writes her own songs. And at a live performance, she is so witty and engaging. She also rearranged her older familiar songs into something that seems brand new and so good, like her song "Come Round Soon". She rearranged it so that it was now driven by the electric guitar, completely different take on the song.

One song that really stood out was her cover of "Chandelier", the original is by Sia. It was just her... and a ukelele. What made it stand out to me was that a ukelele could also be used for this kind of song and in this kind of mood... I always thought it was so twangy and just meant for the country-kind of music that was more happier-sounding. Check out the youtube video of the song, which she performed before (i.e. it's not from last night):

Last night was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ridiculously good I'm always going to gush about it!
