2nd Jan 2013 - Momentous Occasion on the 1st work day of the year

Image
On the first work day of the 2014, Thursday, 2nd January, for the first time in the history of Lawrence Chua & Partners, the lawyers got off work at 4pm and we had a movie gathering at uncle Edwin's house. Thomas has been very VERY keen for the lawyers to get together to watch the movie "In the Name of the Father". The Plan was to leave office at 4pm. The senior lawyers would head straight to uncle Edwin's house while uncle Edwin would get drinks, and Evelyn, Cindy and I will get food for tea as we watched the movie. The movie would end about 6ish 7pm and we would all be 'off' by then. In reality, this is what happened... At 4pm, I left the office with Evelyn, Cindy, and our incoming intern, Avril. The 4 of us proceeded to Tiong Bahru Plaza where we got a sushi platter from Umi Sushi, curry puffs, chicken wings and fried sotong from Old Chang Kee, and sandwiches from Four Leaves. We also got for ourselves bubble tea from Gong Cha. At a...

Jones the Grocer and Elysium

Image
Yesterday, Eugene and I met for dinner and a movie after work. I stepped into Mandarin Gallery for the first time in my life since it was renovated and re-opened, and discovered that Jones the Grocer had an outlet here as well. I only knew of their shop at Dempsey. I was feeling really full from the banana I had in the office at 5pm. So I ordered their hazelnut hot chocolate, which had a cute rock-star bear design, and their entree dish that is called some tart with portabello mushroom, goat cheese and caramalised onions right at the bottom.   I think I ordered just enough for myself to finish - which is good! No wastage for once! Though for Eugene, while he thought the lamb shanks he ordered were good, they were too small. He ordered their roasted wedges as a side order to fill himself up further. And for drinks, their ginger ale with pomegranate was not bad too, although the pomegranate taste wasn't too strong. We then walked over to Cineleisure to catch the mo...

A Good Weekend

Image
(Before I say anything else, I apologise for the poor quality of my photos. It was taken impromptu and I had to use my camera phone, which really isn't that great:/) Yesterday, 19 May 2012, was a really long day in church. I had to be in church by 7:45am to prepare for the worship session of the Community Penetration Seminar 10 Day 1. My alarm clock failed me or something, and I actually woke up at 7:20am!! It was a mad rush as I rushed to do what was the most necessary to me and reached church by 7:50am. THANK GOD I STAY WHERE I STAY. It was a full day at church for the seminar, then Youth Ablaze was just worship and cell discussion where the entire sec 2 zone got together for the first time to get to know each other better and to plan for the Youth Connect next week. As Youth Mentor, I decided to slack and go home to take a nap:D I managed to sneak in a 20-minute nap before Joanne called to say they were coming over to pick me up for dinner! He Li drove me, Eliz, S...

2 Marathons completed in July

Image
In the first weekend of July, I completed the whole X-men movie series. First, I watched the most recent release, X-Men: First Class. Then I watched the first X-Men movie. Followed by X-Men Origins: Wolverine. After which, I watched X2: X-Men United. And ended off with X-Men: The Last Stand. What got me wanting to watch the entire series? I watched X-Men: First Class in KL, Malaysia with my parents and brother, just before church camp began. That really sparked my interest in watching the entire movie series. Then, on Wednesday night, I finished my second movie marathon - the Harry Potter movie series! I went to The Cathay to catch the last instalment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, with Elizabeth, Kah Wan, Joel Chia, Shu-En and Joanne. Before we caught the 7:20pm movie, all of us sans Eliz had dinner at the food court at PS: It was a good ending to the whole series! Now I feel like re-reading the books:)

Charly T's

Image
On Monday, 11 April, I met Eugene for dinner and a movie after work. For dinner, we tried this random place that is located in some small building between PS and Cathay Cineplex. This small restaurant-ish place is called Charly T's. And its concept is really so random and therefore weird and more difficult to like! Just read this display on who Charly T is: Do you think he's just some fictional character? Or the shopowner's name is REALLY Charly T? The food wasn't fantastic. And honestly, I was a bit disappointed because Eugene mentioned that he wanted pasta, and I was game for it. When we got to Charly T's, I was all prepared to have pasta. BUT, the menu we saw was just so... random. In the end, I decided on some wrap, while Eugene got the Moroccan chicken sticks or something like that: This place is really nothing to shout about. If you're curious to experience its randomness, please feel free to go check it out yourself. Then let me know what you think!:) As ...

Spy Game

Image
I went to VideoEzy on Sunday to rent "A Walk to Remember". I ended up renting two more movies because it was 3 for $10. If I only rented 1 DVD, it would be 1 for $5.50. So, we rented "A Walk to Remember", some penguin edition of the Madagascar movie, and the 3rd movie we rented was primarily for my dad - "Spy Game": It is a rather old show, which was released in 2001. Upon the strong recommendation of Eugene, we rented it. Then I watched it with my dad after we got back from dinner on Sunday, and it was a SUPER good show. Very interesting, very exciting, and quite amazing how Robert Redford was such a s-duper cool spy who could observe all kinds of things. So, Robert Redford was SO cool. Brad Pitt, on the other hand - irritating. I just haven't taken a liking to him ever since he broke up with Jennifer Aniston and got together with Angelina Jolie. Oh and in the first few minutes of the movie, OUR VERY OWN ADRIAN PANG had a cameo role! I was so proud of...

Singapore-Taiwan TV collaborations

Image
There is a series of TV dramas these few weeks on Channel U. It features Singaporean and Taiwanese actors and actresses. They film it like movies that don't show on the cinema, but head straight to the television set instead - Channel U calls them "feature films". Tonight's 'instalment' was entitled "爱情折扣"("Love Discount" as a literal translation I think?). It starred Felicia Chin from Singapore, and Wang Chuan Yi (王传一) from Taiwan. Celeste Chong from Singapore was also one of the supporting actresses in tonight's feature film. The storyline was decent and very predictable, as it usually is with all drama serials. But it did not make me cringe in horror or discomfort, as it tends to be the case with alot of our local 7pm or 9pm Channel 8 dramas. The quality was actually not bad for a local(-ish, because of the Taiwanese involvement) production! And we all liked the dress Felicia Chin was in for most of the show, because this show was on...

Ah Kong & Faith are back!:)

Image
You cannot imagine how glad I am that Faith and Boon Yeow are back in LSBC, after returning from Australia a few weeks ago. Last Tuesday (7 Sep), I met Faith for a long brunch at this cafe called Arbite, at Serangoon Gardens. The two of us shared a set lunch that consisted of a soup (spinach I think?), chicken spaghetti and an ice tea. On top of that, we ordered garlic bread and ended off our meal with an earl grey chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The food was delicious, the company was fantastic, and the catching-up time was just THE BEST!:) I then made my way to school for my Land Law lecture. But after my lecture, I met up with Faith again! This time round, it was with Boon Yeow (aka Ah Kong) and 3 other people from church who are in the same cell group as them. Faith invited me to have dinner and watch a movie with them, and I was happy to join in on the fun. We watched this French movie called "Heartbreaker": It is a romantic comedy, and very funny! A bi...

Cute Ad and more (gushing)

Image
So sweet! (If you don't get it, watch it one more time. After your second time, if you still can't get it, leave me a comment and I'll explain it to you!) I think it is really very very sweet when we hear of couples who, from great friends, become boyfriend and girlfriend and "live happily ever after". I'm reminded of my favourite Jane Austen movie adaptation, "Emma". (sorry for this huge photo. Couldn't downsize it!) The heroine of the story, Emma, is a full 8 years younger than her good friend, Mr Knightley (my gosh I don't know his full name! It's just romantic/dreamy enough calling him Mr Knightley:)). (Mr Knightley looks a bit 'hum sap' here. Like all he wants to do is kiss her...) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the ending of the movie adaptation, when Mr Knightley confesses his love for Emma... Mr Knightley: I do not wish to call you my friend, because I hope to call you something infinitely more dear (Me: AWWWW...) Mr Knightley: ...And...

Post Exam Activities

Image
First up, Sue May and I tried out takeout from this new Cantonese restaurant that opened not long ago. This restaurant is really near my church. It is called "Chasing Dragon". I had the Special Fried Rice: It was really good! Together with egg fried rice (YUM), there was veggies, prawns, chicken and pork. All this for £4.20 (not super cheap, but not too expensive as well. Ok, it's the 'usual takeout' price I guess). I'm definitely going to get takeout from this place again! On Thursday, Sue May, Janice and I had a 'proper celebration' since I was the last one amongst the three of us to officially finish exams. We had Dominos pizza with garlic bread and coke! Janice also brought over some lamb stew that she had cooked the night before. It was REALLY GOOD! It made Sue May and I miss the Hall (i.e. British) food we got last year... When we were done eating (a.k.a. stuffed ourselves silly), we sat around and talked, watched a few videos online, Janice play...

Weekend 6

Image
Before I begin writing about the highlights of my weekend, let me tell you that I tried cooking pineapple rice on Thursday and it came out better than the first round! I cooked enough to have it for dinner on Thursday and Friday. Here's a photo: Ok, back to my weekend. Saturday I went to Beeston for my weekly grocery shopping trip with Hongzhen late Saturday morning. John joined us for a little while before heading back home without us. Janice joined us halfway at Beeston as she needed to get stuff from Sainsbury's as well. It was a cold, windy and grey day. I took a shot of the sky from my room just as I looked out and saw this big patch of grey clouds get blown past by the strong wind: One thing that brightened up my day a little were the donuts Janice and I bought from Sainsbury's. They're REALLY sweet and very pretty. Even the packaging is really nice! Janice bought 3, I bought 3. I ate one and gave 2 away today. For dinner, Hongzhen came over with her DELICIOUS fri...
